Splashtop

Deron Chang put me on to something pretty cool that is worth a try. It seems to have the potential to greatly increase the power of your iPad without doing too much. It is an app called Splashtop. Sorry if everyone already knows about this. If you don't you might consider it. The app is about $5 now (though they claim that is a special from $20 for a limited time only) and if you have the app and download a free program from teh website called Splashtop Streamer, you gain the ability to control your full computer from your iPad. Once you go through the process of setting things up, you can access a computer (if it is running) from your iPad anywhere that you can access it through a network. Chang, for example, did work on his computer (in his home) from his iPad (on a bus with his team). He has also been able to run his computer at home from his office in the CISC. I have just begun playing with it and it is pretty cool. I was working on my computer in my study last night from my living room on my iPad. It would allow you to have your computer on the front desk and manipulate it from anywhere in the room as you walk around. Alas, it is running your computer so apps on the iPad don't work while you are doing this but it has real applications for what it does do. It is definitely worth checking out.

  1. I think these types of solutions are maybe the way to go in order to keep the power of the computer, but have the convenience of the iPad. My idea is to have a Mac Mini in the classroom that is run by an iPad.
